AIA Airshow 2012

The clear blue sky over Lake Las Vegas was filled on Monday afternoon, April 30^th, with the noise and sights of small acrobatic planes, entertaining onlookers with their aerial feats of daring. The small planes conducted air maneuvers to the delight of spectators in the Village. The show was nearly an hour long followed by fireworks that lasted 15 minutes.

This show was sponsored by the Aviation Insurance Association staying at the Westin Hotel of Lake Las Vegas.  All residents of Lake Las Vegas were informed of and invited to this special event.

The Silver Wings Wing Walking Group flew over with a lady standing on top of a plane waving to a stunned crowd.  There were planes that performed loops, dives, and other types of dangerous flyovers.  A Tiger Squadron of planes flew over the lake several times, wowing spectators with tricks done in perfect formation.

At dusk, Julie Clark flew a Mentor T-34 plane close to the water and released multi colored streams of smoke and fireworks from its wings.  There were spectacular fireworks in the air and on the shores of Lake Las Vegas for the grand finale of an exciting exhibit. 

An Unexpected Aviation Experience…at Lake Las Vegas?

Early Monday morning on the 30th of April, my wife Miranda and I were out enjoying our usual morning exercise, near our home, inside the pristine “South Shore” development of Lake Las Vegas. As we approached “The Lake Club” at South Shore, and as we often do, we stopped to speak with our good friend Denise Boone. As usual, Denise was out walking her dog “Cash”, arguably the most adorable canine in all of Las Vegas. We have been delighted to learn that Denise is not only a fun and smart person, but she just happens to be the veritable “go to” source for anything going on at Lake Las Vegas.

Denise had some very exciting information for us regarding the day’s happenings at the Westin Hotel Resort, located on the north shore of Lake Las Vegas. She shared the fact that the Westin Resort was currently hosting an Aviation Conference. Being a pilot myself, my ears instantly became keenly attuned to what she was saying. She mentioned, that later in the day, there would be an air show complete with aerobatic flying and wing walking, performed over the Lake itself. Miranda and I were instantly intrigued as both of us relish any opportunity to go to an air show!

After returning home, I called the Westin Hotel to confirm the starting time of the event and the friendly Westin hostess informed us that the air show would begin around 5:30pm. Both Miranda and I have learned, from personal experience, that the Westin is a five star experience and that any reason to go there is reason enough! Miranda hosted a real estate education seminar at the Westin Lake Las Vegas Resort Hotel only last week and the staff services, food and amenities were impeccable! We could hardly wait for the hours to pass until the air show began!

As the universe often provides, a special opportunity was being presented to us by attending this event. You see, I have been busy over the last several months developing a new day/night vision product line specially designed for the Apple iPhone 4s. The new production model of our Patented, MonoLoc^TM, ^“iWitness” mounting system had arrived only days before. We had been out, almost all of the prior two days, testing the iWitness and recording some amazing “highly magnified” video and photos, of our Lake Las Vegas wildlife. The iWitness performed flawlessly. Thanks to Apple, Inc….a star was born last October when the iPhone 4s was released. Now, with the iWitness as its companion, it is a SUPERSTAR!

I realized that the air show at the Westin would be the perfect opportunity to capture some long range, fast moving aerial targets with the iWitness mounted on my new Leupold Gold Ring spotting scope.
